Giantmicrobes are based on actual microbes, cells, organisms and other critters, only 1,000,000 times actual size!
MRSA is a Methicillin-resistant strain of Staphylococcus aureus, the bacterium responsible for several difficult-to-treat infections in humans. Named for its resistance to Methicillin, it is actually resistant to most penicillins and cephalosporins, which eliminates a huge number of antibiotics as possible treatments. The evolution of such resistance does not cause the organism to be more intrinsically virulent than other strains, but it does make MRSA infection more difficult to treat.
MRSA is especially troublesome in hospitals, prisons, and nursing homes, where patients with open wounds, invasive devices, and weakened immune systems are at greater risk of nosocomial infection.
Each plush microbe includes a printed card with fun, educational and fascinating facts about the actual microbe or cell. They make great learning tools for parents and educators.
